Monday Morning Statement

I got this in an e-mail the other day, and at the bottom it challenged me to pass it on. I don't generally pass forwards on, but there's a message here and that's what I wanted to pass on. I don't mean to offend anyone, Michael Richards is just making a point.

The fact that we don't stand up for ourselves against newcomers to our country (who want to change our laws so it feels more like their home, a home which they fled to move here) is why we are losing our identity. Now, if you are proud to be who you are, read on....

PROUD TO BE WHITE

I have been wondering about why Whites are racists, and no other race is. Proud to be White Michael Richards makes his point... (Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TVs Seinfeld) This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act.

There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc. And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman' ... and that's OK. But when I call you, Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink ... You call me a racist. You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET...

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month, we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives we'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that??

A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US. Yet if there were 'White colleges' That would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists. You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist...

I am proud... But you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists??

BE PROUD TO BE WHITE ! It's not a crime yet, but getting real close!

Well, um...generally Black Pride or Puerto Rican Pride or Gay Pride has to do with celebrating themselves and their culture. Nothing wrong with that.

White pride seems to want to celebrate exclusivity. What WE are and THEY aren't.

Sorry, but I don't agree with this message.

This is great - exaclty what I wanted - to spark a debate/conversation!

I agree there's nothing wrong with celebrating your culture, but it should go both ways. If I want to celebrate White Pride I should be able to do so without being racist. Same as Black Pride, etc. should be able to be celebrated.

I see far too many examples of other races and cutures coming into our country and trying to change it to be more like thier home country, the place where many have fled. I know they may have rituals and beliefs they want to continue with and share with us, and that's fine. But we also have our way of doing things that we want to keep as part of our country. In Canada we sing the National Anthem in English and French, not Hindi, we shouldn't have to change.

Well, I'm not so sure how it is in Canada, but down here we do have a bunch of days that celebrate White Pride. But white people in this country come from all different kinds of backgrounds, so it is those backgrounds that are celebrated. St. Patrick's Day for the Irish, Columbus Day has become a de facto celebration of all things Italian. Oktoberfest celebrations in the Fall celebrated Bavarian culture. And in large cities like NY you will see days and parades celebrating the Welsh, the Scottish, the French, and just about any other European nationality. Same as you will see with Indian-Americans, Arab-Americans, Chinese-Americans, etc...

As for the generic inclusion of all Black people in Black History month and such...I can understand it. I don't know what the percentage of African-Americans living in this country are descended from slaves, but I would assume it would be significant. These people were taken away from their homes and their cultures and a new culture was born out of that travesty. Black Americans feel a kinship with one another like no other race can feel. My opinion.

I do think, and I believe this was one of your points, that racism can exist in every skin color. I did a post once on how racist I believed Spike Lee was (and he is one of those that believes that racism is a one-way street. White to Black) and it still drives more traffic to my blog than any other post. Honestly.

So here's a question. From my limited knowledge of Canada, I believe that Quebec is the only province in the country with a predominantly French-speaking population. And yet the entire country sings the national anthem in both English and French. Why is that acceptable when the rest of the country had deeper ties to England than France? What if Nova Scotia, in 50 years, found that it had a predominantly Hindi speaking population? What if they decided to adopt it as an official language?

All I'm saying is that things change. Here in the States we will eventually see Spanish take its place as an "official" language in parts of the country (We don't have an official language actually). Do I like it? Not really, but things change. If I lived in California or South Florida or the Bronx I would probably already speak Spanish fluently and I wouldn't care either way.

I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but you've got me thinking.

I don't really know why the whole country sings the national anthem in French and English, I guess for me that's just how it's always been and I've accepted it without really thinking about it. Personally I only sing it in English (partly b/c I don't know all the French words) b/c I think it's stupid that one province is predominantly French and the rest of us suffer, so to speak, for it. I guess if in 50 years Nova Scotia found that the predominant language was Hindi and we adopted it as a national language, I would accept it. I don't think I'd learn the Hindi words b/c it's not my background.

In Saskatchewan we have a lot of First Nation's people. Our government may have wronged them in the past. I agree, there were things that were done that shouldn't have been. And we've tried to correct this but we've been paying for it for hundreds of years. I know throwing money at the situation doesn't help, but when is it enough? No First Nation's people get their university education for free, they don't pay tax, isn't that reverse discrimination? Some First Nations people use the racist card at every opportunity - they break the rules and are given a punishment as anyone else would be but they call it racism.

Can't we all just get along? Celebrate what we want to celebrate without being looked down on or made fun of or being called racist?

In a perfect world. Unfortunately, the baggage that comes with the term "White Pride" is awfully heavy. Like I said before, it's just as much about THEM as it is about US and that isn't the way to do it.

I rock it by celebrating other cultures as I would celebrate mine. Oktoberfest? I'm in. Gay Pride Parade? Holla! Black History Month? Fascinating. Whatever party or celebration you got, I want an invite.

And the invite is reciprocal. How's that for a motto? :)

Oh, and the issue of colonial nations (Every country in North & South America, Australia, etc...) and their native peoples. Not sure what to say there. We owe a debt that can never be re-paid.

Wiping out an indigenous culture is no small thing.

English vs French Canadian Anthem

i have mixed emotions about being born in such a melting pot of culture - Canada. Also, i vaguely remember something about some Vancouverites raising a stink about performing the Canadian Anthem in Hindi at the 2010 Winter Olympics, there's even a facebook group against it.

i think it's all very interesting... but my vote is for tolerance. i think i'd be okay with our anthem would be cool sung in whatever language, it's already been changed a million times. I learned the french and english version when i was in elementary school, what's another language?

Anyway, that's not what this post was all about, but i just thought i'd add this about the anthem... it seemed relevant at the time, but i have had little sleep lately. :D
